For a lot of people, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer — a long weekend, a cookout, a day off. But the day was never meant to be about sales and barbecues. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for the men and women who died serving in the United States Armed Forces. Here’s what the day really means, how to honor it, and the story behind “Some Gave All.”
Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day: Know the Difference
The two are easy to mix up, but they honor different people:
- Memorial Day (last Monday in May) honors those who died in military service — the fallen.
- Veterans Day (November 11) honors all who have served, living and dead.
It’s a meaningful distinction. On Memorial Day, “thank you for your service” isn’t quite right — the people being honored aren’t here to hear it. The day is about remembrance, not celebration.
What Memorial Day Really Asks of Us
The holiday grew out of the years following the Civil War, when communities began decorating the graves of fallen soldiers — it was first known as Decoration Day. More than 150 years later, the purpose hasn’t changed: to pause and remember the cost of the freedoms we live with every day.
The cost of freedom is paid in blood, sweat, and tears. We will never forget.
Ways to Honor the Fallen
- Observe the National Moment of Remembrance. At 3:00 p.m. local time, pause for one minute of silence.
- Visit a cemetery or memorial. Place a flag or flowers. Read the names.
- Fly your flag at half-staff until noon, then raise it to full-staff for the rest of the day.
- Tell their stories. Talk to your kids about what the day means and who it’s for.
- Support Gold Star families. Remember the families who carry the loss every day.
