How to Choose Duck Decoys: Mallards, Teal & Carrying Gear

Choosing duck decoys starts with the water you hunt and the gear you can realistically carry. Use this guide to compare mallard and teal options, plan your rigging, and avoid buying a spread that does not fit your outings.

Start with your hunt, not the biggest pack

Before comparing brands, write down three things: the species you expect to encounter, whether you will carry your gear or transport it by boat, and the water conditions where you plan to set up. A pack that fits in a boat may be awkward on a long walk. Include anchors, lines, wet equipment, and your other field gear when estimating the load.

There is no single decoy count that suits every outing. Begin with a manageable setup, learn what is missing, and add equipment deliberately. When comparing two packs, compare the complete setup cost rather than just the decoy price.

Mallard or teal decoys?

Mallard and teal decoys represent different species. Choose around the birds and habitat you actually encounter rather than treating every duck-shaped decoy as interchangeable. Check each listing for its species, sex mix, body size, and poses. If you already own decoys, consider what the new pack adds before duplicating what is in your bag.

Plan lines and weights before you order

Do not assume a decoy pack arrives ready to deploy. Read the included-components list. Check the decoy attachment points and whether you need separate lines, clips, swivels, and anchors. Your water depth and conditions should guide the rigging choice; follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Make a simple inventory of what you already own. If you are considering a different rigging system, verify compatibility before buying a whole set. A low pack price is less useful if you have overlooked the accessories required to use it.

Make transport part of the decision

Measure your storage area and compare the bag dimensions with your decoys. Ask how you will carry the setup alongside your other gear and whether exposed lines or anchors will tangle in transit. Consider how you will unload and repack it when the equipment is wet.

The GUGULUZA mesh decoy backpack is one carrying option to compare. Confirm the selected bag’s measurements and straps; capacity can vary with decoy shape and rigging. A bag advertised for decoys does not automatically fit every spread.

Before-buying checklist

  • Does this pack represent the species I want to add?
  • Have I checked the selected variant and pack contents?
  • Will the decoys fit my carrying bag and storage area?
  • What separate rigging is required?
  • Can I carry the full load, including wet gear and anchors?
  • Have I compared the complete setup cost?

Common questions

Should I buy motion accessories right away?

First make sure your basic decoys, rigging, and transport work together. If you later add a motion accessory, check how it operates, what components it requires, and the current regulations for your hunting location.

Are goose decoys the same purchase?

No. Our hunting selection also includes goose silhouettes, collapsible goose options, and a flag. Compare those separately by species, deployment method, included stakes, and transport needs.

Have these products been tested by Backwoods Brotherhood?

We have not field-tested these specific products for this guide. We distinguish manufacturer descriptions from personal experience and do not promise that any decoy will produce a particular result.
